Not my normal read, but I loved it!

I don’t normally read chick lit, psychological drama is my genre of choice (hence 4 star instead of 5), but I came across this little gem, and I was hooked immediately – read it in a couple of days.
The story is really well written, the main characters are likable, you really empathise with Emily’s situation. Her depth of feeling is palpable, and I have to say I welled up a few times, as it was clear this author knew her subject matter well. I look forward to the next in the series….

I loved this story! I actually missed Emily when it was over! A brilliant beach read to get lost in.

Hilarious and heartwarming!

I loved this book – the author writes with a sense of reality and yet it was a perfect book for escapism. I found myself emotionally involved in Emily’s story as she tries to deal with her grief and move on with her life – and at times found myself shouting at her, willing her to make the right choices! The characters are easy to relate to – in so many ‘romance’ themed books, the protagonists seem to live in a world rooted in fantasy (think Louboutin-wearing career woman who jets off to New York and meets ridiculously unconvincing male love interest!), but every character in Getting Over It feels like a real person with real flaws and qualities. I also found Emily’s inner monologue to be absolutely hilarious! She is the kind of character you want to get to know and that you can truly empathise with, making her the perfect heroine for this story.

The novel deals with some emotional issues as well as the more lighthearted moments – these sections stand out as they are so well written and sensitively handled, never descending into schmaltzy melodrama. These parts are written with true feeling and just the right amount of humour to make them poignant and emotionally effective. I laughed and cried my way through much of the book!

I would thoroughly recommend Getting Over It to anyone – even if you wouldn’t normally read this sort of novel (I don’t!) there is so much variety in the story that there is something that every reader will appreciate. Can’t wait for the next novel in the series.
